According to JapanToday, KDDI has announced they will soon launched a 1Gbps Internet service delivered over their Fibre to the Home network. The service promises synchronous speeds of 1Gbps, although the article implies that speeds will vary dependant on location in Japan. The monthly service cost will be 5,985 yen (about A$72) for the basic Internet and IP phone service. This is intended to compete with NTT, who currently control over 70% of the Japanese FTTH market.

In terms of our competitive position in the Global digital economy, 12Mbps versus 1000Mbps is a big difference.
